Obsidian's RPG Tyranny Gets a Release Date

Obsidian’s upcoming RPG Tyranny gets a release date that will likely surprise many gamers, as the title is slated for a release in the next month on PC, Mac, and Linux.

Obsidian Entertainment is a studio that embodies an old school approach to making video games. The development team behind Fallout: New Vegas and Pillars of Eternity is not one to lean on graphical prowess to create demand for their games – instead, Obsidian produces titles that feature compelling, deep gameplay and storytelling that spans over hours rather than minutes. The studio’s past successes on both major titles and crowdfunded games has garnered it a sterling reputation among fans and critics alike, and RPG gamers are now eagerly awaiting Tyranny, Obsidian Entertainment’s next project.

Tyranny is an almost satirical take on typical RPG elements that was announced earlier this year at the Game Developer’s Conference 2016. Obsidian is once again teaming up with Paradox after the two companies made magic happen with Pillars of Eternity, and now pre-orders for Tyranny have gone live on Paradox’s official website that indicate the game is going to launch very soon. According to the pre-orders page, Tyranny will be coming to PC, Mac, and Linux computers on November 10.

While Obsidian and Paradox both indicated that the studios would be aiming for a 2016 release, the announcement of Tyranny a mere seven months ago had led many to speculate an early 2017 release was much more likely. Instead, Tyranny will be debuting before the 2016 holiday season is even in full swing, with the core game costing $44.99 and two special editions, each with various extraneous goodies, will launch at $59.99 and $79.99 each.

Tyranny is one of the best RPG games to come out of E3 2016, and the pedigree of its development team has expectations set quite high for Obsidian’s newest isometric role-playing game. While its gameplay is anticipated to be nothing short of sublime in the same way that Pillars of Eternity was, fans of the genre are most intrigued by Tyranny due to the game’s intriguing premise. Tyranny will see players assume the role of a high-ranking official in an evil overlord’s army – the fight for the world has already taken place, and the good guys lost. Obsidian is also promising that player decisions will have a significant impact on the way the game’s story plays out, so all hope might not be lost for those who want their character to see the light over the course of Tyranny‘s narrative.

Tyranny promises to be a fresh take on a classic genre, and if Fallout: New Vegas and Pillars of Eternity are any indication, it’s likely to be a fine game in its own right as well. Players will be able to find out for themselves in just under a month, as Tyranny hits just before other major RPG releases like Final Fantasy 15 begin to dominate the schedules of fans of the genre.

Tyranny will release on November 10, 2016 for PC, Mac, and Linux.
