No PS4 Pro Patch for Until Dawn

No PS4 Pro Patch for Until Dawn

After receiving numerous inquiries from fans on Twitter, Supermassive Games confirms that Until Dawn will not be optimized or enhanced for the PlayStation 4 Pro.

The PlayStation 4 Pro is almost here. Sony’s upgraded console has a release date of November 10, which means it’s about time for gamers to make up their mind: is it worth the purchase? For some fans, the decision may be influenced by which current games — like Until Dawn, for instance — are getting an upgrade to support the new console.

We already know that The Last of Us: Remastered will support PS4 Pro, as will Final Fantasy 15 when it releases later this month. However, some developers are also letting their fans know up front if a game will not be receiving any enhancements for the console, and today, PlayStation 4 exclusive Until Dawn joined that list.

GameSpot was the first to take note of a tweet sent out by Supermassive Games this morning. The developer behind the horror title told fans that there are “currently no plans in place to optimise #UntilDawn for #PS4Pro.”

GameSpot reports that Supermassive likely felt the need to respond after receiving a deluge of questions from fans about the status of Until Dawn in these last few days leading up to the PS4 Pro’s launch. It’s worth noting, however, that the game’s PlayStation VR Version, Rush of Blood, will have improved graphics when played on the new console.

While some fans are understandably disappointed by this news, Supermassive Games certainly isn’t the only developer that’s not providing immediate support for the PS4 Pro at launch. CD Projekt Red informed fans a couple months ago that they should not expect updated graphics for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

There will certainly be an audience for the more powerful PlayStation 4 Pro at launch, but it’s likely that some developers may be waiting to see just how well it actually sells before deciding to dedicate resources to patching an already-released title. The PS4 Pro and Microsoft’s upcoming Project Scorpio represent a new path for the games industry as well, and it’s unclear yet if consumers are going to come along for the ride over the long term.

There’s also the fact that some developers may just prefer to focus on their next unannounced or unreleased title instead of focusing on a game that’s already hit the market. By that logic, one would expect the majority of games that will release for the PlayStation 4 in 2017 to include PS4 Pro support. As for now, here’s the list of more than 30 games that will officially support the PlayStation 4 Pro at launch.

Until Dawn is out now on PlayStation 4.
