Is Activision Prepping DLC for Modern Warfare Remastered?

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered players find hidden content that might suggest that Activision plans to release DLC for the game in the future.

While there was a great deal of debate as to whether the futuristic combat of Infinite Warfare is the right direction for the Call of Duty franchise to be headed in, traditionalists were pleased to hear that Modern Warfare Remastered would be bundled with the release. Now, there are signs that Activision has big plans for the re-release going forward.

Modern Warfare Remastered players have discovered a gun in the game that wasn’t featured in the original. A post on Reddit details the XM-LAR, a weapon that was actually introduced to the Call of Duty series in Modern Warfare 2.

A further thread states that the gun “works perfectly” in-game, even though it’s only accessible by tinkering with what’s going on behind the scenes. The XM-LAR even has a working killfeed icon, so it’s clear that some amount of work went into integrating it into Modern Warfare Remastered.

The going theory among the Reddit community is that the XM-LAR is evidence that Activision is planning to release DLC for the game. This would be somewhat unexpected, as Modern Warfare Remastered was originally conceived as a pre-order bonus for Infinite Warfare, rather than a full-scale release in its own right.

However, if it turns out that the Call of Duty community prefers a remaster to the current instalment, it would perhaps be wise for the publisher to shift its focus in terms of ongoing support. Battlefield 1 has already amassed a healthy player base, so it’s important that its biggest rival in the FPS genre is able to put up a fight.

Of course, there are plenty of questions to be asked regarding what DLC for a remaster would look like. Based on the gun that’s been found, adding content from Modern Warfare 2 would seem to be the top priority; multiplayer maps, new weapons, and the sequel’s campaign could all be recycled.

That being said, it’s possible that the XM-LAR is simply something left over from the development process. Maybe it was used as a placeholder model, or maybe it was implemented as a test for potential DLC — but we won’t know until Activision or Infinity Ward offers an official statement.

Until then, we’ll just have to wait and wonder. Who knows what else is hidden away in Modern Warfare Remastered?

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered is available now for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
