Dead Rising 4 Will Not Feature Campaign Co-op

A representative of Capcom Vancouver confirms that Dead Rising 4 will not feature campaign co-op, and will instead restrict its multiplayer functionality to a side-mode.

This year’s E3 event was the setting for some good new for fans of Capcom’s secondary zombie-slaying franchise, as Dead Rising 4 was officially unveiled during Microsoft’s press conference. However, it’s fair to say that most of the updates we’ve received since that initial reveal have been rather disappointing.

First, it was confirmed that the series would be losing one of its core gameplay mechanics, as Dead Rising 4 doesn’t feature a time limit. A few weeks later, it was announced that voice actor T.J. Rotolo would not be returning for the sequel, despite having played its protagonist Frank West in previous instalments.

Now, there’s more bad news for anyone eagerly anticipating the new Dead Rising title. The upcoming game will not feature co-operative play as part of its campaign mode, instead relegating multiplayer to a side-mode set in a mall — a callback to the original game.

Players were able to play through the main campaign co-operatively in Dead Rising 2 and Dead Rising 3. In fact, co-op was a major selling point for the most recent instalment, and was heavily promoted ahead of its release.

It’s easy to see why fans might be disappointed that there’s no such seamless co-op play in Dead Rising 4. Given that we don’t know too much about how the new co-op mode works, it remains to be seen whether it’s a worthy replacement for campaign co-op.

“The structure is, the four of you start the game together, you start in a safe house,” explained Capcom Vancouver’s David McAnerin in an interview transcribed by Destructoid. “You get a load up, get some weapons, get yourself ready to go; we unlock the doors, it’s killing, mayhem, madness lots of interesting missions that take advantage of our systems.”

Based on McAnerin’s comments, it seems that the new mode is inspired by the Left 4 Dead series, as well as the popular Zombies mode from the Call of Duty franchise. Of course, given the fact that Dead Rising 4 is a brawler rather than an FPS, the finished product could be quite distinct from those influences.

The co-operative mode in Dead Rising 4 could succeed on its own merits. However, the fact that there’s no way to play the campaign co-operatively is sure to disappoint many longstanding fans of the series.

Dead Rising 4 is scheduled to release for Xbox One and PC on December 6, 2016.
