Steve Carell Set to Join Minecraft Movie?

The first reveal for the cast of the Minecraft movie looks to be close, as Steve Carell is reportedly in talks to join the film adaptation of the popular title.

Since the game officially released in 2009, Minecraft has been a global phenomenon, with over 22 million sales of the game being made on PC and Mac alone. Due to this incredible popularity, a lot of fans are very eager to find out more about the upcoming Minecraft movie – and who will star in it.

Now it looks as though Warner Bros. is getting close to announcing the first cast members to be lending their acting talent to the film, as Variety reports that Steve Carell is in talks to join the big screen production. Having previously starred in movies such as “Foxcatcher”, “Crazy Stupid Love”, and “Anchorman”, Carell is certainly a well-known face that the Minecraft movie needs to attract attention from outside of the gaming community.

So far we know very little about the Minecraft movie, although Warner Bros. have already been confident enough to reveal the film’s release date down to the day, in 2019. The project will also be developed in 3D and IMAX as well as being directed by “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” star Rob McElhenney. The latest draft of the script was created using the talents of McElhenney and “Wonder Woman” scribe Jason Fuchs.

Being this close to a confirmed cast member is the furthest the movie has come since it was announced to be in early production over two years ago. Since then, the film has likely undergone hundreds of changes, but it’s worth the wait to see if Warner Bros. can create the rarity that is an actually good video game movie.

Minecraft is certainly a franchise that has the resources and budget to have its movie made right and, if done correctly, could spawn a range of well-performing sequels in the following years. At present, the recent Warcraft movie is the one to beat, having just recently become the most successful video game-inspired film of all time.

In other recent Minecraft news, the 1.11 ‘Exploration Update‘ has now begun to go live, introducing features such as llamas, mansions, and treasure maps to the ever-expanding title. Despite releasing so many years ago, Mojang and Microsoft seem to have no plans to slow production on the highly-profitable franchise which is now available on almost all currently active consoles.

Minecraft is available now for PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Wii U, and various mobile devices.
