After announcing its new console, Nintendo also confirmed that the Nintendo Switch would have full third-party support. Including a variety of third-party developers and publishers such as Activision, Bethesda and Epic Games, fans were excited at the prospect of these big names creating big games for the platform. However, very few of these third-party companies have revealed exactly which games they will be bringing to the console.
Joining this small list of companies with confirmed Nintendo Switch games is Warner Bros. In a tweet published to the WB Games Twitter account earlier today, the publisher revealed that LEGO CITY Undercover will be released for the Nintendo Switch, as well as PC, PS4 and Xbox One.
LEGO CITY Undercover, which was previously a Wii U-exclusive, is an open world sandbox game that features an undercover LEGO cop called Chase McCain. McCain is out to bust the bad guys and is able to drive cars, fly helicopters, take on disguises (gaining abilities in the process), and build things with LEGO bricks. In the Wii U version, players could use the console’s GamePad controller to find criminals, though it’s unclear how (or if) this feature will be preserved for the Nintendo Switch.

On the one hand, LEGO City Undercover got good reviews, with Game Rant‘s own critique calling it a “wonderful addition” to the Wii U’s library of games, calling its open-world “immense,” and saying that it’s “one of the best LEGO titles to date.” For those who missed out on the Wii U version of the game, the Switch/PC/PS4/Xbox One re-release gives gamers a chance to play an overlooked gaming gem.
However, on the other hand, some fans looking forward to the Nintendo Switch are concerned about how many games on the console will simply be ports rather than original titles. Out of the nine confirmed Switch games, it looks as though five of these will be ports – Undercover, Dragon Quest X, Just Dance 2017, Mario Kart, and Splatoon (the latter two of which are said to be updates of the Wii U versions of the game). Not to mention, this isn’t including the currently unconfirmed Skyrim: Special Edition Switch release, the rumored Pokemon Sun and Moon Switch release and EA’s ‘big’ Switch port.
While there’s nothing wrong with releasing proven, well-liked games on a new platform, especially when a Switch release could allow gamers to play these games on the go, it seems that many fans are keen to see fresh ideas on the console. There’s still some time for these fresh ideas to be revealed, true, but right now these concerns are understandable.
LEGO CITY Undercover will be released on Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4 and Xbox One in spring 2017. The game is currently available on Wii U.
