Pokemon Sun & Moon Characters Modded into Smash Bros.

Two noteworthy characters from Nintendo’s RPGs Pokemon Sun and Moon make their way into Super Smash Bros. for Wii U via a new mod for the fighting game.

It’s no secret that the recently released Pokemon Sun and Moon are two of the most popular games out right now, especially when one considers its appeal to critics and fans alike, which certainly led to the RPG titles’ strong GameStop sales. With interest in the role-playing game franchise conceivably at an all-time high thanks to the aforementioned games’ simultaneous launches and the success of the series’ mobile version in Pokemon GO, it makes sense for the brand to have enormous amounts of crossover appeal with different audiences.

So, since Pokemon Sun and Moon have arguably rejuvenated the game franchise once more, it seems as if the modding community has decided to capitalize on their popularity by modding the character Lillie and the Psychic-type Legendary creature Cosmog into Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. Now instead of the two taking a more peaceful approach to training in order to become more adept with their skills in the Pokemon universe, Lillie and Cosmog are a forced to be reckoned with on the Smash circuit.

The Pokemon Sun and Moon characters have been added into Super Smash Bros. thanks to the modding community GameBanana creating skins for both Lillie and Cosmog. To be specific, the modders known as SunSpirit, Scorpob, TheRealHeroOfWinds, Demon Slayer, TheOneThatIsntFalco, and the SmashForge Team have helped the duo become unofficial stand-ins for the standard Rosalina and Luma models.

Although some fans might be hesitant to use the mod from GameBanana due to fears of messing up their Super Smash Bros. games somehow, the creators insist that it’s safe to use, noting that it can be used over Wi-Fi because it’s just a skin. Those who want to give Lillie and Cosmog a go can download the mod right here.

While the addition of Lillie and Cosmog into Super Smash Bros. is definitely a fun little treat, this is far from the first instance of the modding community incorporating characters outside of the fighting game into the title. As it happens, one of the more popular fan creations came from modders Nibrock.Rock and KTH, who re-skinned Shulk with Kingdom Hearts‘ protagonist Sora. In spite of the fact that the KH main character worked well with Shulk as his model, many argued that the more appropriate choice for Sora’s base would have been his Square Enix brethren in Final Fantasy 7‘s Cloud Strife.

Taking all of this into account, it’s only a matter of time before more Pokemon Sun and Moon characters are modded into Super Smash Bros. In the past, fans have already been privy to an official Pokemon Trainer character resembling Ash Ketchum, so perhaps Professor Oak’s cousin Samson could eventually step into the arena to do battle with the help of mods.

Pokemon Sun and Moon are available now for Nintendo 2DS and 3DS, while Super Smash Bros. is available for Wii U and 3DS.
