Star Wars Battlefront Sequel 'Much Bigger' Says EA

Video game publisher and developer Electronic Arts teases its intentions to make the forthcoming sequel for Star Wars Battlefront “much bigger” than before.

It’s no secret that Star Wars Battlefront fans are anxiously awaiting next week’s release of the science fiction first-person shooter’s Rogue One DLC, but to an even greater extent the title’s player base is looking forward to the next proper entry in the series. Speaking of which, during an investor briefing in Europe today, Electronic Arts CFO Blake Jorgensen described the forthcoming followup to Star Wars Battlefront as being a “much bigger, much more exciting” game than the 2015 release.

Although the continuation in the Star Wars Battlefront series hasn’t officially been given an exact launch date yet, Electronic Arts has promised the sequel’s release to be in fall 2017. As far as its development team is concerned, the publisher has stated in the past that the EA-owned companies DICE and Motive Studios will be handling its creation.

Also during today’s investor event, EA’s Jorgensen acknowledged prior criticisms that Star Wars Battlefront was too superficial when it came to its content, modes, and gameplay mechanics. As it happens, the publisher’s CFO declared that the team behind the followup to Battlefront will do all it can to provide additional depth by attempting to enhance the Star Wars experience.

“If there was criticism, they just wanted more. So we’re taking that criticism to heart as we build the next game and trying to address any of the issues that they had.”

While it’s safe to presume Electronic Arts will devote all of its available resources to refining the existing aspects of gameplay in Star Wars Battlefront in anticipation of its sequel, one feature that fans desperately want at launch that hasn’t been directly addressed by the company is the inclusion of a solo campaign. As many gamers will surely recall, the title’s player base was incredibly disappointed to discover that Battlefront had no single-player mode upon its release, and they hope the feature is available in Battlefront 2 when it launches.

Despite Star Wars Battlefront‘s shortcomings, though, the game went on to considerable success, as it shipped 14 million copies, exceeding Electronic Arts’ prediction of moving a little over 13 million units, making it one of the best-selling titles in the history of Star Wars games. Of course, with the upcoming sequel building off of the original’s solid foundation while also featuring content that ties into the new movies such as Episode VII: The Force Awakens and Episode VIII, the followup has the potential to become an even bigger hit.

With any luck, Electronic Arts will stay true to its claims of Star Wars Battlefront‘s next entry being “bigger” and “more exciting” than last year’s release, and provide everything lacking from 2015’s installment and then some. That said, should the sequel fall short of fans’ expectations, there’s always Respawn Entertainment’s third-person action-adventure game inspired by the science fiction franchise and Visceral Games’ take on the Star Wars universe to look forward to, with the latter of having a release date that’s still “a few years” away.

Star Wars Battlefront‘s next entry is currently set for launch sometime in fall 2017.
