If there’s one series that gamers almost universally look forward to on any Nintendo-made portable, it’s definitely Pokemon. The franchise has been going strong for quite some time and there are major plans in place to celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2016. One of the ways that the Big N and The Pokemon Company are planning on celebrating the big 2-0 is by re-releasing Pokemon Red, Blue, and Yellow on the 3DS, but Japanese fans will be getting a little more with the forthcoming Virtual Console titles.
All three of the aforementioned versions, as well as the Japan-only Pokemon Green, will be made available to consumers as part of a package deal that includes a 2DS that matches the color of each version. The end result is something that’s almost eerily reminiscent of the original Game Boy that the classic Pokemon games launched on, and those with the longstanding urge to catch ’em all will undoubtedly be hit with an appropriate amount of nostalgia.
Sadly, at this point in time, the bundle is only set to arrive in the land of the rising sun. There is an interesting tidbit to grab from the announcement, however, as Nintendo has confirmed that those that pickup one of the four retro titles will be rewarded with a code to download the elusive Legendary Pokemon Mew in both the old-school game and in the newer versions (either Pokemon X, Pokemon Y, Pokemon Omega Ruby, or Pokemon Alpha Sapphire) – provided they own one of the 3DS games, of course.
To clarify, this Mew-centric giveaway has yet to be confirmed for wannabe Pokemon Masters around the globe, but odds are that the same deal will be applied when the titles arrive on 3DS in February 2016.
This is some awesome fan service on the part of Nintendo, and it likely won’t go unnoticed by consumers when it comes time to plop down some of their hard-earned cash. Those hoping to import the devices should note that the Blue Version variant will be made available exclusively at Pokemon Centres across Japan – which is yet another thing to be envious of the country for – while the other three will be made widely available.
This also marks the first time that the Nintendo 2DS will be set for sale in the country, which is odd in and of itself. Regardless, Ninty has likely logged quite a bit of research into its decision to release these things now, so we’ll have to remain unreasonably jealous of the hardware package over here in the meantime.
Would you pick up one of these bundles if they were released over here? Are you excited to tear through the original Pokemon games again?
Pokemon Red, Blue, and Yellow are set to arrive for the Nintendo 3DS on February 27, 2016.
