Far Cry Primal Reveal Trailer

Far Cry Primal Reveal Trailer

Ubisoft officially announces Far Cry Primal – the next game in the long-running open world, first-person shooter series – after teasing it in a live stream.

Yesterday, Ubisoft launched a mysterious live stream teasing an upcoming game release. Many predicted that Ubisoft was teasing a new game in the Far Cry series with the live stream, particularly one that could potentially involve dinosaurs.

The live stream has now concluded, and as it turns out, those that predicted a new Far Cry game were right on the money. The next game in the long-running Far Cry franchise from Ubisoft is official, and it goes by the title of Far Cry Primal.

While Far Cry Primal won’t feature dinosaurs as previously rumored, it will showcase other extinct animals, including sabertooth tigers and woolly mammoths. Set 12,000 years in the past, the game stars Takkar, a hunter stranded in a valley called Oros, not long after the Earth’s most recent Ice Age. As Takkar, players must fight to survive against the great beasts of 10,000 B.C., including rival humans.

Players will have a variety of tools and weapons at their disposal (all of which must be crafted), including bows, spears, and the ability to utilize fire to ward off predators. Takkar will also be a part of a tribe, with the reveal trailer showing him working in tandem with others to take down the huge, lumbering woolly mammoths. It hasn’t been made clear if the tribe is composed of all AI-controlled characters, or if cooperative play is on the table, like it was in Far Cry 3 and Far Cry 4.

The game’s creative director, Jean-Christophe Guyot, had this to say about the game’s Stone Age setting:

“The Stone Age is the perfect setting for a Far Cry game. Far Cry usually puts you at the edge of the known world, in a beautiful, lawless and savage frontier.  The Stone Age is, in a way, the very first frontier for humankind; it’s the time when humans put a stick in the ground and claimed land for their own, the time when we started climbing the food chain.  That came with conflict, against other humans of course, but also against nature itself.”

In the meantime, those that want to see what a Stone Age Far Cry game looks like can watch the Far Cry Primal reveal trailer below.

Some may be surprised that Far Cry Primal is stripping away the typical bombastic gameplay that has defined the last few entries of the series, and using 10,000 B.C. as a setting. However, Ubisoft has always been highly experimental with the Far Cry franchise, with each entry (up until and 4) feeling very distinct from one another. Far Cry Primal looks to continue that tradition, and ripping players away from modern conveniences like guns and vehicles is just the way to do it.

As previously stated, Ubisoft has done some very creative and experimental things with the Far Cry series in the past, so it’s good to see that they’re still willing to forge new ground with the franchise. These experimental projects have included Yeti DLC for Far Cry 4 as well as the ridiculously over-the-top 80’s homage Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon.
