It’s official: Nintendo Switch has been played out in the wild. And late night host Jimmy Fallon was the person to get his hands on the console along with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
Last night on The Tonight Show, one of Fallon’s guests was Nintendo of America’s president and chief operating officer, Reggie Fils-Aime – although there was also a surprise appearance, from Shigeryu Miyamoto, creator of Super Mario and The Legend of Zelda. The segment started with Fallon playing Super Mario Run for iOS, which put a smile on his face. However, Fallon totally lost it with excitement when Fils-Aime pulled away a question mark cube to reveal the Nintendo Switch.
The demo started with the Nintendo Switch in its dock and Breath of the Wild showing on the big screen of The Tonight Show’s set. Fils-Aime called the world of Breath of the Wild “massive,” saying “anywhere you see, you can get to.” Before handing off the controls to Fallon, Fils-Aime wanted to show off “the magic” of Nintendo Switch, which led him to pull the Switch from the dock and hand it over to Fallon.
Fallon, who said he has watched the trailer for the Nintendo Switch many times and knows everything about it, took the console and proceeded to show off how the kickstand pops out of the back of the unit. Fallon then picked the Nintendo Switch back up and started playing Breath of the Wild. Fallon excitedly shouted “it’s three consoles in one,” before proclaiming that “this is the game changer.”
He may not be wrong, as the CEO of GameStop also talked up the demo of the Nintendo Switch. The Nintendo Switch is still due to launch in March of 2017, however neither a firm release date nor pricing information have been announced by Nintendo.
As for Breath of the Wild, for a long time the newest The Legend of Zelda has been touted as a launch title for the Nintendo Switch. Yet, despite being shown off not just on The Tonight Show but also being featured heavily in many of the promotional trailers for the Nintendo Switch, it might not be a launch title after all. Even though the game is looking near final, rumors are that Breath of the Wild will miss the Switch’s launch window – and based off the most recent reports, it is expected to launch in June 2017. Whether that changes, however, remains to be seen – but hopefully Nintendo fans will have the game sooner rather than later.
