Uncharted 4 Sold 8.7 Million Copies in 2016

At CES 2017, Sony reveals the lifetime sales of its popular action adventure game, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End including holiday sales data for its software and hardware.

After originally missing its holiday launch window in 2015, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End launched to universal praise earlier this year from both critics and fans alike. The game has proven to be a boon for Sony and the PlayStation 4, not only selling faster than its predecessor Uncharted 3 but also outperforming all other releases in May 2016 as well. While Sony has been fairly mum on the numbers, fans now know just how popular this game actually was, thanks to the sales data finally being made public.

At the annual Consumer Electronics Show held in Las Vegas, Nevada, Sony revealed that its PlayStation 4 exclusive title Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End managed to sell 8.7 million copies globally. Considering that the game launched at the beginning of May 2016 and sold 2.7 million copies in the first week, this goal was accomplished in only nine months. As such, Uncharted 4 is now the fastest selling first-party title on the PlayStation 4 to date.

In addition, Sony announced that PlayStation 4 software sales remained strong through the holiday season. Starting from November 11, 2016 through the holiday season, 50.4 million copies of games were sold and downloaded from the PlayStation Network worldwide. The console itself has sold through 6.2 million units through the holiday season as well, placing the total number of units sold at 53.4 million as of January 1, 2017.

Even though Uncharted 4 launched earlier in 2016, Naughty Dog continues to add content to the game. Since launch, fans have been able to enjoy all of its DLC offerings for free, with optional micro-transactions available to unlock items immediately. Already the game has received a number of new maps, modes, and tons of new cosmetic items which enable players to customize their characters as they see fit. In its most recent update, a new co-op Survival mode was added, pitting four players against 50 waves of enemies. To help mix things up, the waves are further broken up into 10 separate stages with five different types of objectives mixed in as well.

For many however, the most exciting piece of content still remaining is the story campaign known as Uncharted: The Lost Legacy. This standalone DLC expansion sees both Chloe Frazier and Nadine Ross team up in what appears to be a prequel story for both characters. With Nathan Drake now firmly on the sidelines, The Lost Legacy appears to be that first foot forward into brand new territory for the franchise.
