Deus Ex: Mankind Divided Gameplay Trailer

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided Gameplay Trailer

With Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, publisher Square Enix looks to be returning to the acclaimed cyberpunk series’ roots. Jean-Francois Dugas, the game’s director over at developer Eidos Montreal, has confirmed that the science fiction title can be completed without killing anyone, bringing the franchise’s hacking and stealth-based gameplay back to the fore. Meanwhile, it’s clear that an impressive amount of work has gone into creating the title’s nightmarish future of biotech and oppression.

Deus Ex fans could hardly wait for more news about Deux Ex: Mankind Divided, but unfortunately for some, Square Enix has been cryptic about the title’s features. The game was initially unveiled at the end of an intriguing Alternate Reality Game called Can’t Kill Progress, and further teaser videos did little to stem the tide of speculation surrounding the title. Last week, however, Square Enix revealed that the title would finally be seen by the public – at E3 2015.

The publisher has lived up to its word, with an impressive gameplay video showcasing the world of Deus Ex: Mankind Divided’s new game engine. Living during a so-called “mechanical apartheid,” Adam Jensen returns, working as as double-agent looking to stop a mysterious militant group. Meanwhile, the press conference also revealed that Deus Ex: Mankind Divided would be coming to the public in early 2016, for Xbox One, PC, and PS4.

Hunting down a target, Jensen confirmed that he had a no-kill mission in place – perhaps hinting at the level of non-lethal gameplay that will be on show in the title. This continued with some of the weapons showcased during the gameplay trailer and the conference. Although Jensen has a weapon now built in to his biotic upgrades, stealthily hidden in his arm, the video itself showed the character using an electric weapon, which may have the power to stun enemies in levels without causing lethal harm.

It remains to be seen just how much Deus Ex: Mankind Divided will stick to the roots of the cult classic franchise, but so far the signs are good. Fans of the stealth-based cyberpunk series put sneaking mechanics and options for a non-lethal approach pretty high up their collective wish list, and it looks as though Eidos Montreal and Square Enix have taken those fan desires on board. Meanwhile, there will hopefully be enough variety for those after a more aggressive approach to still enjoy the title.
