Shovel Knight Coming to Nintendo Switch

Shovel Knight Coming to Nintendo Switch

Yacht Club Games announces a Nintendo Switch version of Shovel Knight, while also revealing the company’s substantial plans for the game throughout 2017.

Just one day before Nintendo is expected to unveil the Nintendo Switch’s lineup of games during a special event on January 12th, Yacht Club Games has revealed that it is bringing Shovel Knight to the new console. Not only is the Switch getting the critically-acclaimed platformer throwback Shovel Knight, but it will also play host to its expansions, including the upcoming Specter of Torment add-on.

As explained by Yacht Club Games in a post on its website, 2017 will be a big year for Shovel Knight beyond it making its way to the Nintendo Switch. Yacht Club Games has significant content updates planned for the game in 2017, both paid and free, which should take the Shovel Knight experience in promising new directions.

Luckily for fans, Yacht Club Games didn’t spare any details when discussing the future of Shovel Knight. For example, we know that the two-player co-op mode, once exclusive to amiibo-compatible Nintendo platforms, will be making its way to PC, PS4, and Xbox One as part of a free update. Furthermore, the “body swap” mode, which allows players to switch the gender of playable characters, will also be added for free, launching simultaneously with the Specter of Torment expansion this coming spring.

Additionally, Yacht Club Games is changing the way that it’s selling Shovel Knight to consumers. The core experience is being renamed to Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove, which players can purchase if they want access to future expansions for free. All three previously released pieces of story content fall under the Treasure Trove umbrella, including the original game (now with the subtitle Shovel of Hope), the Plague of Shadows expansion, and of course, the upcoming Specter of Torment add-on.

Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove brings with it significant value, and to reflect that, its price will increase this spring. Those that aren’t interested in the full Shovel Knight experience, though, can pick and choose which expansions they want to buy, however.

For Shovel Knight fans, Yacht Club Games has a lot more in store for 2017, including a four-player multiplayer mode, in addition to a brand new campaign starring King Knight. Concrete details on these updates will come later, but in the meantime, Yacht Club Games has proven its dedication to supporting Shovel Knight years after its release, so anyone interested in picking it up should rest easy knowing that this support doesn’t appear to be ending any time soon. And who knows, maybe if enough people buy it on Nintendo Switch, we could see Yacht Club Games’ wish of seeing a Zelda character added to Shovel Knight fulfilled.

Shovel Knight is available now for 3DS, PC, PS3, PS4, PS Vita, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and Wii U, and is in development for Nintendo Switch.
