Super Mario Odyssey Will Be at E3 2017

Nintendo officially confirms that its forthcoming video game for the Switch console, Super Mario Odyssey, is going to be present at E3 2017 this summer.

Without a doubt, one of the most exciting titles revealed and discussed during the recent Nintendo Switch live stream presentation was easily Super Mario Odyssey. As it happens, it seems as if Nintendo has decided to make the forthcoming Mario release an open world sandbox experience, which has prompted many fans looking forward to playing Super Mario Odyssey to wonder exactly when they will be able to see and learn more about the game.

During a Switch reveal event held yesterday in New York, IGN asked Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime how the company managed to plan the news for the press conference while also being able to save some announcements about the system and Super Mario Odyssey for E3 2017. According to Fils-Aime, Nintendo had initially considered allowing the attendees at the event to try out the new Mario game, but the Big N eventually decided to wait until June, thus confirming Super Mario Odyssey‘s presence at this year’s Electronics Entertainment Expo.

“The only decision that was made from an E3 consideration standpoint was ‘do we show Super Mario Odyssey from a hands-on perspective today versus E3?’ And we’re going to show it at E3, but at least from a Nintendo perspective, there’s no other consideration that is driven by E3.”

While the news of Super Mario Odyssey being at E3 2017 is definitely exciting to say the least, there’s still a ways to go before the event happens, as this year’s Electronics Entertainment Expo is scheduled for June 13 through June 15 in Los Angeles. With that being the case, though, the lengthy months in between provide fans who don’t live in the California city ample time to arrange travel plans and secure lodging right now for E3 2017 should they wish to do so.

For those who won’t be able to attend E3 to try out Super Mario Odyssey, the wait to play the game will be quite a while longer due to it being slated for a nebulous release sometime later this year. As Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto has put it, fans should expect to encounter a title that has been made with a “core” gamer design in mind, meaning that it has not only been put together to be accessible by everyone, but also will be challenging and provide gameplay elements and mechanics for those who enjoy action-driven games.

Since the release for Super Mario Odyssey won’t be alongside the Nintendo Switch in March, it will be interesting to see if the lack of a title featuring the Big N’s main mascot at the console’s launch will negatively affect the system’s day one sales and go on to impact analysts’ predictions that the Switch will outsell the Wii U. Of course, with the Switch having a solid foundation firmly in place with launch titles such as The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, it’s possible for the Switch to hold its own throughout the year, giving Super Mario Odyssey the chance to provide strong supplementary sales down the line.

Super Mario Odyssey is currently scheduled to release sometime this year for the Nintendo Switch.
