The worlds of LEGO and video games have been intertwined for years, and not just because of the various LEGO games that are now available for fans to enjoy. Indeed, many a video game fan has been more than willing to create incredible gaming LEGO builds, including some who have even gone to the lengths of recreating The Legend of Zelda‘s Hyrule Castle with the building blocks. However, one game world that some may feel unlikely to fit with the use of LEGO is The Last of Us.
Nonetheless, one intrepid fan of the beloved Naughty Dog game decided to persevere, and create a LEGO build based on The Last of Us. The creator, Tim Schwalfenberg, was more than happy to then share some terrific snapshots of his diorama over on Flickr. It wasn’t too long before the creation managed to gather some huge plaudits from within the LEGO community, as shown by The Brothers Brick.
It’s easy to see why, too. This LEGO build is an excellent match for the grim and austere locations of the world of The Last of Us, and Schwalfenberg has managed to use LEGO bricks to great effect. It’s not only the locales of the game world that have been recreated in LEGO form, either, with a pair of mini figures of Joel and Ellie also incorporated into the diorama.
According to Schwalfenberg, this build took a month to complete, with an overall time spent clocking in at over 100 hours. The diorama ended up using approximately 20,000 bricks, and covers an area of 3.5 by 2 feet. To give an additional feel to the build, Schwalfenberg used custom 3D-printed pieces, such as those used to add extra texture to the outside of buildings.
The diorama certainly shows how malleable LEGO is as a form to build with, as one might not necessarily expect such a dingy world as The Last of Us to work with the building blocks. Of course, this doesn’t mean that Naughty Dog’s franchise is going to make it into the official LEGO roster any time soon. After all, the story of Joel and Ellie is a pretty far cry from the less serious stories of Harry Potter or Star Wars.
Thankfully, The Last of Us fans won’t have to rely on a LEGO spin-off in order to get more thrills from the franchise. Sony announced The Last of Us: Part 2 at PlayStation Experience 2016, and gamers are already speculating on what the game will throw at them, as well as thinking on Ellie’s role as the main character. For now, though, fans can have a look at this great diorama to bring those The Last of Us feelings back.
