Overwatch Skin Accidentally Makes Mei Thinner

Overwatch Skin Accidentally Makes Mei Thinner

Overwatch just released a slew of fantastic new skins for their Lunar New Year event, but a bug in one outfit has Mei looking noticeably thinner than usual.

The newest Overwatch event is in full swing and this time they’re celebrating the Lunar New Year. This being the year of the rooster, many of the Overwatch heroes have gotten skins to reflect the holiday and theme. Mei, in particular, has a very traditional, and gorgeous, skin that speaks to her Chinese heritage. However, the outfit is giving her some body issues.

In this case, a bug associated with her skin is making Mei look much thinner than she usually does, and people aren’t especially fond of the results.

The issue has to do with diversity, something Overwatch prides itself on. The roster is made up of heroes of many different shapes and sizes, nationalities, races, and sexual orientations. It’s a reflection of the diverse world we live in and, most importantly, a reflection of the many different kinds of players out there. So, when Mei — who is known for having an average body type — is suddenly a size two, it can upset those who celebrate women that don’t adhere to glamorized body images.

Kotaku reports that, thankfully, this wasn’t a cosmetic decision by Blizzard and the company made their awareness known immediately through the game’s official forums.

There’s a bug with Mei’s Luna and Chang’e skins right now that’s causing her waist to appear much smaller than normal. We’ve already fixed the bug internally, but it’s going to require a patch to implement (ideally it’ll be included in whatever next patch hits your gaming platform).

Thanks for the quick reports, btw. And happy Lunar New Year!

Those that believe this is just nitpicking should take a closer look at the skins. By comparison, Mei has a noticeably slimmer waist. It’s so drastic, in fact, that it could only be a bug.

Blizzard says the issue will be squared away in an upcoming patch. So, rest easy Mei fans. Your girl will be looking like her old self again in no time. And, hey, at least this skin is worthy of being called legendary.

Until then, indulge in the Lunar New Year festivities! Blizzard has implemented a new capture the flag mode — something they said would never happen, funny enough — which should mix things up. Also, as mentioned above, there are some truly epic skins to be had that appropriately reflect the theme in some fun and surprising ways.

Overwatch available now for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.
