Destiny 2 Rumor Gains Traction After Mega Bloks Reveal

Destiny 2 Rumor Gains Traction After Mega Bloks Reveal

Toy company Mega Bloks unveils an image of its upcoming Destiny Mega Construx set, adding fuel to the fire that suggests Destiny 2 is on its way soon.

Recently churning in the rumor mill is the possible follow-up to Activision and Bungie’s 2014 sci-fi shooter title Destiny. Many signs have pointed at Destiny 2‘s existence, not the least of which have been one Activision earnings report that stated the majority of Bungie’s endeavors were focused on the could-be sequel and an article published by the developer itself that confirmed a tentative 2017 release date. Stack these sprinkles of somewhat updates with a previous Mega Bloks product listing (via NeoGAF) that potentially leaked information about Destiny 2, and it looked like the mostly indirect teases about the possible game’s release would culminate in an official statement – or so it seemed.

Today, Mega Bloks, the manufacturer behind construction-block toys, released a promotional still of a yet-to-be-released Destiny Mega Construx set. The teaser image was posted on the company’s Twitter account. These Mega Contrux sets are aimed at an older audience looking to bolster their stockpile of collectible items, and it seems Destiny is no exception. However, beyond the surface of this upcoming merchandise, fans of the original title have picked up on a few details that have sparked up the Destiny 2 rumor once more.

As previously mentioned, in January of this year, three Mega Bloks product sets were published to the Amazon market before they were intended to – and before they were even announced. These, of course, were Destiny sets, and fans soon found out about their existence, sharing the product specifics. Originally posted on a Mega Bloks fansite were descriptions of the upcoming playsets, but one was emphasized over the others. Details for the “Cabal Bruiser Battle Building Set” set Destiny fans on higher alert, as it mentioned events that haven’t occurred in the 2014 title, such as the Cabal Red Guard invading the Last City’s Tower. Many believed this to indicate a possible sequel, though it is entirely speculation.

Mega Bloks stirred up the sequel rumor again with its announcement of an upcoming Destiny Mega Construx set, but what’s more is that the particulars of it seem to confirm one of the three previously unannounced sets discovered by fans late last month. The first leaked set was entitled “Destiny Cabal Goliath Tank Building set,” and was slated to include a “buildable Goliath tank” and “four highly-detailed, super-poseable micro action figures includ[ing] Commander Zavala, one Cabal Phalanx, and two Cabal Psion.” Additionally, the Cabal figures would come bundled with “detachable Siege Dancer armor, weapons, and shield accessory.”

Many have pointed out that certain parts of this description almost exactly mirror Mega Bloks’s tweet posted today. The caption that accompanied the promo image states, “Pit the veteran skill of Commander Zavala against the Siege Dancers’ tank w/the Mega Construx™ Destiny Goliath Tank Strike!” This has caused a ton of Destiny fans to theorize that all three previously-leaked sets will be confirmed and that because one hints at not-yet-seen events, that Destiny 2 may very well be coming soon.

Using game merchandise as a strategy to kick up some “will-they, won’t-they” conjecture can be seen as a fairly smart move on Bungie’s behalf, and utilizing a large brand like Mega Bloks is all the better. In the past, Destiny‘s original toy line from Mega Bloks looked pretty fantastic and sold quite well among the game’s die-hard fans. Additionally, just this weekend, Mega Bloks unveiled the Pikachu and Charizard figures joining its Mega Construx Pokemon set – an announcement that lines up nicely with Pokemon GO‘s generation 2 update. The timing just might be right for this to indicate a future statement regarding Destiny 2.

Destiny 2 is reportedly still on track for a 2017 release. Destiny is available now on PS4 and Xbox One.
