It’s been a while since fans have heard from Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi and his team at Mistwalker Studio, but if he has his way, the company will begin working on an entirely new game in 2016. In an interview with Famitsu, the developer laid out the plans for the studio which does hint at a brand new project while continuing work on their recently released free to play mobile title, Terra Battle.
For the coming year, Sakguchi confirmes in the interview that Mistwalker will continue to create and release major content for Terra Battle including a new scenario led by Yasumi Matsuno, and new downloadable content that will start from Chapter 35. In addition to Terra Battle development, Mistwalker has more ambitious plans to start production on a completely new title at the same time. While Sakaguchi didn’t reveal too much about the new project, he did mention that he’s hoping the game will be completely original with a new worldview behind it.
Considering that Sakaguchi hates sequels, hearing that the new project is focusing on being original isn’t very surprising even though many fans would probably like to see a continuation of franchises like Lost Odyssey. Interestingly enough though, Sakaguchi’s mantra can be seen in his work at Square Enix where every new Final Fantasy game released under his care featured new characters and stand alone stories. This trend continued until he left the company, at which point Square Enix began creating sequels to popular entries such as Final Fantasy X-2.
While the prospect of a new game from Sakaguchi’s team is exciting, it’s not likely that anyone will see this title for quite a while. Based on the language used in the post, the development is most likely in very early stages of production and considering the recent free to play push from Mistwalker, it’s unknown if the studio is even equipped to begin development on a large scale project at the moment.
Sakaguchi, better known as the father of Final Fantasy for helping create and establish the series during his time at Square Enix, left the company in 2004 to start his own studio studio known as Mistwalker. The team started strong, releasing new RPG style games like Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey and The Last Story. Since the release of The Last Story about three years ago, the studio has slowed down on development, moving away from traditional platforms in order to release a free-to-play RPG mobile game called Terra Battle.
