How Injustice 2 Differs from the First Fighting Game

As we eagerly await the release of NetherRealm’s upcoming fighting game Injustice 2, some new gameplay footage has surfaced, courtesy of iZombie‘s Rahul Kohli. In an interview with community specialist for NetherRealm, Tyler Lansdown, the actor discusses what’s new in the upcoming game when compared to its predecessor, Injustice: Gods Among Us.

According to Lansdown, a newly-implemented gear system should be a cause of much excitement for Injustice 2 fans. After each fight, players will receive new pieces of gear which allows them to customise the look of their favorite fighters. Not only this, but the extensive gear system will actually affect how each character plays, which should help suit the fighter to each individual’s play-style.

The game’s currently closed beta has recently taken place with Batman, Supergirl, Superman, Blue Beetle, and Atrocitus as playable characters. Some gameplay footage is shown after the interview, though Rahul Kohli admits his difficulty with fighting games, and soon receives five defeats. The actor does get a chance to show off each of the characters in a fairly basic way during his time with the beta however. Each hero seems to have their own style of fighting, from Superman’s up close and personal brawling to Supergirl’s zoning-based combat system.

When the full game releases, Black Canary will also be joining the roster and NetherRealm has designed her as a very dangerous enemy that needs to be fought at range. As Lansdown comments: “If she gets in on you, it’s game over.” He also reports that the character can be zoned decently to keep distance between her and the enemy, but she does have some tools that help her get in by passing through projectiles.

In other Injustice 2 news, a new trailer has been released which highlights Superman’s backstory in the in-game universe. As fans of the first game and comic series will know, Injustice previously featured a turning point for the long-time hero as he kills the Joker in cold blood and begins to reign over the world. Although Superman appeared to be defeated by Batman and his team of associates, now a new threat is approaching, and the Man of Steel still has allies out there.

Injustice 2 releases on May 16, 2017 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
