Over the past few months, Rockstar Games has given players of Grand Theft Auto 5 lots of new content to enjoy. Ranging from the incredibly spooky masks, flashlights, and Adversary Modes in the GTA Online Halloween surprise, to the Executives and Other Criminals update, which let GTA Online players launch warfare from and against super yachts, players have had options. But despite all of these downloadable freebies, there’s one question that has persisted: is Grand Theft Auto 5‘s story DLC going to show up any time soon?
While nothing is confirmed (yet), Shawn Fonteno (who does the voice and mo-cap for GTA 5 protagonist Franklin) seems to be hinting at DLC in a post on Instagram. A captionless image shows the actor dressed in a mocap suit – complete with mocap-ready shoes – seated in front of posters promoting other Rockstar Games titles, like Grand Theft Auto 4, Max Payne 3 and L.A Noire.
There’s the possibility that Fonteno is just doing this to mess with fans, of course, but it’s worth noting that this isn’t the first time he’s alluded to new Grand Theft Auto 5 content. Last year, for example, the actor did an interview in which he confirmed that GTA 5 DLC is in the works.
Unfortunately, while Fonteno has seemingly let the cat out of the bag on his own, Rockstar appears less inclined to share. Eight months ago (some months after Fonteno confirmed that story DLC is in development), Strauss Zelnick (the CEO of Take-Two, Rockstar’s parent company) said that they weren’t even discussing story DLC, leading Take-Two to clarify that Rockstar will reveal things when it’s good and ready. This was then followed up a few months later when Take-Two president Karl Slatoff spoke at an earnings call and again suggested that Rockstar just isn’t ready to make any grand announcements. Yet.
But while there’s no info on what the DLC will be about or when it will see the light of day (it could be some months away if Rockstar is still in the process of animating it), fans also want to know if this DLC will only be available on PC, PS4 and Xbox One. Several months ago, Rockstar stated that future content updates would only be possible on current-gen, leaving players on PS3 and Xbox 360 out in the cold. It’s certainly a frustrating situation – one made worse by the lack of communication on Rockstar’s part – but hopefully the developer will offer some answers soon.
Do you think that Rockstar Games is still planning on delivering some Grand Theft Auto 5 story DLC? Are you still interested in returning to the world of Los Santos?
Grand Theft Auto 5 is out now for PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.
