Spec Ops: The Line

Spec Ops: The Line

Spec Ops: The Line always had an interesting premise, beginning two years ago when its unveiling trailer was played at the Spike VGAs and elicited a response of being a shooter that would focus on the grey spots of war, one that would challenge the player to think about their decisions. Thankfully, 2K Games has released a new trailer for the game which features electric guitars and plenty of machine guns.

After months of hiatus, 2K finally sheds light on Spec Ops: The Line. Looking at this latest trailer, we’d say those months have been good to the squad-based shooter, as the game looks gorgeous. Like the first teaser hinted at, the game utilizes large-scale environments, as players engage in firefights among the buildings of a ravaged Dubai.

The trailer also shows off some really smooth and polished gameplay, including The Line’s emphasis on sand. In the video below, you’ll see the game’s main character, Captain Walker, shooting out windows to drop sand on enemies. There are also some brutal finishing moves that can be executed on a downed enemy.

Check it out for yourself:

The game is shaping up nicely and it’s evident how the years have development have been put to use. That being said, I can’t help shake the feeling that this kind of a trailer isn’t really warranted for Spec Ops: The Line. Since its first reveal, The Line has always given off the feeling that it would be an intelligent shooter, that it wouldn’t succumb to the “dudebro” archetypes of so many other games in the genre. This feeling was reinforced by last month’s trailer for Spec Ops: The Line, but in this case it seems like 2K is going for the opposite effect. Yes, this trailer does successfully highlight the gameplay improvements the team has made to the game, but the backing music just seems to dilute much of what makes The Line unique, and I fear it may turn some gamers away.

Spec Ops: The Line releases Spring 2012 for the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC.
