Nintendo has allowed gamers to download and unlock hidden Pokemon for many years now, but the 20th anniversary of the Pokemon series calls for something special. Nintendo has now revealed the lineup of mythical Pokemon that can be downloaded during the year of 2016.
Pokemon fans who are itching to get their hands on some mythical Pokemon, both old and new, should plan on making frequent stops to Gamestop over the course of this year. Nintendo will be offering one mythical per month, starting with Mew, which will be available starting on Monday, February 1st. All the legendary Pokemon will be available for download on any Pokemon 3DS title, except for virtual eShop games, like the upcoming Pokemon Red, Blue, and Yellow ports.
To download Mew, gamers need to bring their Nintendo 3DS with them to their local GameStop between February 1st and February 24th. GameStop employees will have codes available to download the level 100 Mew to Pokemon X, Y, Omega Ruby, and Alpha Sapphire. After Mew’s run is complete, the availability of the mythical Pokemon varies between GameStop and simply accessing the Nintendo Network through a wi-fi internet connection. The full schedule is as follows:
Mew: February 1 – 24 (GameStop)
Celebi: March 1 – 24 (Nintendo Network)
Jirachi: April 1 – 24 (Nintendo Network)
Darkrai: May 1 – 24 (GameStop)
Manaphy: June 1 – 24 (Nintendo Network)
Shaymin: July 1 – 24 (Nintendo Network)
Arceus: August 1 – 24 (GameStop)
Victini: September 1 – 24 (Nintendo Network)
Keldeo: October 1 – 24 (Nintendo Network)
Genesect: November 1 – 24 (GameStop)
Meloetta: December 1 – 24 (Nintendo Network)
Whether it’s a GameStop or Nintendo Network month, gamers can download the mythical creatures in Pokemon by accessing the game and choosing receive gift from the menu. Afterwards, the code for a Pokemon can be entered, or if it’s a Nintendo Network month, gamers can choose to connect to the internet instead to receive the mythical Pokemon that’s available at the time. However, gamers should keep in mind that the code-based Pokemon can only be downloaded until May 31st. If the code isn’t used by then, it will become invalid.
This is the latest in Nintendo’s celebrations of Pokemon‘s 20th anniversary. Pokemon fans have been delighted with the promises of games like Pokemon Go! and Detective Pikachu, as well as the ports of Pokemon Red, Blue, and Yellow to the eShop. Although Nintendo has yet to announce a new main series game, it looks as though there will be plenty to keep Pokemon fans busy during this anniversary celebration.
Mew will be available for Pokemon X, Y, Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire starting February 1st, with another mythical following each month thereafter.
