Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment’s Suicide Squad was one of the biggest movies of the summer. With such hype surrounding the film, many had hoped that a tie-in video game would be released alongside it. After all, given that Warner Bros. is the publisher behind upcoming DC Comics fighting game Injustice 2, as well as the Batman: Arkham games, it would make sense for the company to release a big budget video game based on the hit movie too.
Unfortunately, Kotaku‘s sources say that although a Suicide Squad video game was in the works at developer Warner Bros. Montreal, this title has now been cancelled. Warner Bros. executives chose to shelve the title following “a long period of turbulence” and that the game, which had reportedly been in development for two years and offered co-op gameplay, “failed to impress Warner Bros. management” during greenlight meetings.
Warner Bros. Montreal is now said to be working on a new Batman game that stars Damian Wayne. Damian is the son of Batman and Talia al Ghul and has also been a member of the League of Assassins. In DC’s 2016 comics relaunch, DC Rebirth, Damian becomes the leader of the Teen Titans, aiming to take down his grandfather (and Batman’s enemy) Ra’as Al Ghul.
While the game itself looks likely as Warner Bros. previously said that it has “endless possibilities” for Batman games, it’s unclear when this game will be announced. Allegedly, the Damian Wayne-starring title was initially set to be revealed in December, but “a year of shake-ups” at the Montreal studio means that the game may not be released any time soon.
While many gamers will no doubt be disappointed at WB Montreal’s change in plans, not all is lost, as Injustice 2 will feature Harley Quinn and Deadshot. The Suicide Squad characters will be just one of several well-liked characters available in the game, such as Wonder Woman and Blue Beetle.
As for whether other Suicide Squad characters will be added to the game – or whether Damian Wayne will also join the character roster to get gamers excited ahead of his main game debut – that’s unknown at this point. Developer NetherRealm Studios previously stated that Injustice 2 will be “more aggressive” with DLC, though, so even if these characters aren’t available in the game during its initial release, they could well be added to the highly anticipated fighting game post-launch.
The Batman game starring Damian Wayne from Warner Bros. has yet to be officially announced.
