New Star Wars The Old Republic Cinematic Trailer Debuts

Don’t miss the epic and beautifully animated cinematic trailer for Star Wars: The Old Republic‘s upcoming expansion, titled Knights of the Eternal Throne.

The latest expansion for Star Wars: The Old Republic launches in December, so in preparation for that, the game’s developer, Bioware, has created a CG cinematic trailer called “Betrayed”.

The 6-minute cinematic tells the story of a Jedi and her daughter, who is growing extremely powerful in the Force. The trailer pairs and fits in with the story of the trailer released last year for The Old Republic‘s Knights of the Fallen Empire expansion. That expansion’s trailer featured two brothers who were training and honing their Force powers under the direction of their father, a character who shows up in this trailer as well.

By the end of the trailer, mother and daughter are on different sides of the Force. This speaks to the theme of the Knights of the Eternal Throne expansion as described by Bioware:

Be the Outlander and command a team of hand-picked allies as you face one of the most dangerous families in Star Wars™. Mother against daughter. Sister against brother. It’s a fight for control of the throne. You decide who will live, who will die and who will rule the galaxy. Fight to influence the galaxy for the light or dark side of the Force!

Speaking of the expansion, Bioware says that Knights of the Eternal Throne features nine chapters, five new levels and two new planets that fit into the existing story and world of the MMORPG. Players take on the role of The Outlander, “a […] veteran of the Great Galactic War” as they embark on the new story crafted by Bioware.

As epic and grand as the cinematics and stories of Bioware’s Star Wars universes can be, The Old Republic (and the Knights of the Old Republic games of the past) are no longer considered canon in the Star Wars universe. So all the stories told within that world do not tie into any of the greater storyline of the movies or the new trilogy that started with The Force Awakens last year.

When The Old Republic launched in 2011, it was the fastest growing MMO in history, but after subscriptions fell off sharply, The Old Republic became free-to-play a year after the game released, with a new incentivized subscription model (for example, this expansion will be free to any Premium players who are part of that subscription plan). Bioware has continued to support the game and releases new content expansions each year.
