Pokemon: The First Movie is Returning to Theaters

The Pokemon Company reveals that Pokemon: The First Movie and Pikachu’s Vacation will make a surprise comeback to select theaters for two days in October and November.

With Pokemon Sun & Moon‘s release just around the corner, The Pokemon Company is hard at work hyping the series as a whole for the 20th anniversary celebration. Its latest anniversary gift to fans will bring back the very first Pokemon film to select theaters.

Announced today on the official Pokemon website, The Pokemon Company revealed that Pokemon: The First Movie will be shown at select Cinemark theaters on October 29th and November 1st. The movie, which tells the story of the Pokemon Mewtwo creating an army of clone Pokemon, will be played at over 200 movie theaters, with tickets costing a mere $5. The film will be preceded by the short Pikachu’s Vacation, just as it did when it originally premiered in the United States back in the 1990s.

Fans should note that this is the exact same film that was shown in the late 1990s. It features the original English dub cast, and doesn’t contain any footage from The Uncut Story of Mewtwo’s Origin. Portions of this short have since been added to home releases of the movie and it has also been included in its entirety as a special feature with Mewtwo Returns. However, the story detailing Mewtwo’s origin and its relationship with fellow clone Amber won’t make an appearance in this original theatrical cut.

Although most players are looking ahead to the new features and content that Pokemon Sun & Moon will contain, The Pokemon Company has also been looking back to the origins of the game and anime series lately. The Pokemon Generations anime details major events starting with the very first game, allowing viewers to relive the excitement from the classic games. In addition, Pokemon GO is currently limiting its players to catching Pokemon that originated in Pokemon Red & Blue, so there’s been a fair amount of focus on the classic entries this year.

Fans of the series who grew up with Pokemon starting at Generation 1 will most likely be charmed to hear that the film is returning to theaters. Pokemon: The First Movie released at the absolute apex of the Pokemon series hype, which is sure to stir up a lot of good memories for long-time fans.

Pokemon fans who are interested in seeing the film should consider picking up tickets as soon as possible, as they’re available for pre-order now. The film will only have one showing on October 29th and November 1st each, so tickets may sell out quickly.
