EA: PS4/Xbox One Sales to Reach 100 Million in 2017

EA estimates that 100 million PS4s and Xbox Ones will have been sold by the end of 2017, also adding that it is “extremely excited” about the new hardware models.

Electronic Arts’ latest financial call brought with it plenty of news about the company’s future plans, including confirmation that Star Wars Battlefront 2 will be released next year and a commitment to the Titanfall franchise. However, the company didn’t just discuss its own games and plans with investors, as it also revealed some estimates about PS4 and Xbox One sales.

According to Electronic Arts‘ internal estimates, combined, the PS4 and the Xbox One will have sold 80 million units by the end of 2016. EA’s chief financial officer Blake Jorgensen also added that 100 million units will have been sold by the end of 2017. Additionally, Jorgensen noted that the install base for the current generation of consoles is 33 percent higher for the first 35 months in the west.

EA’s sales predictions are in line with Sony own estimates, as it says that 60 million PS4s will have been sold by the end of 2017. Just over 47 million PS4s had been sold as of September 30, so the console is on track. Microsoft is no longer reporting Xbox One sales, but estimates from earlier this year suggested that over 20 million consoles had been sold. No doubt, the release of the PS4 Slim, PS4 Pro, Xbox One S and Xbox One Project Scorpio models will have a huge impact on those numbers in the coming year.

Plus, speaking of those new console models, EA CEO Andrew Wilson said, “We believe the new console options will add depth to the hardware cycle, growing installed base and to the player value proposition.” Jorgensen, meanwhile, said that while it’s “a little early for us to know what the big impact will be of the new PlayStation and Xbox Models,” the company is “extremely excited about them.” He also added that “the gameplay quality is obviously fantastic. We think the consumer experience is going to be great on both of those consoles.”

EA’s enthusiasm is a positive for gamers potentially looking to buy a PS4 Pro or an Xbox One Project Scorpio, as it suggests that the company has plenty of plans to make use of the boosted hardware. EA has already showed Mass Effect: Andromeda gameplay on the PS4 Pro while other titles such as Battlefield 1 and FIFA 17 will get the Pro treatment too. With a year out until the Project Scorpio launch, it’s unclear which games EA will optimize for the new Xbox One but it seems unlikely that it will leave the Microsoft console out in the cold.

Electronic Arts‘ most recent release is Titanfall 2, which is available now for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
