Injustice 2 to Get Watchmen Characters?

A tweet from NetherRealm Studios’ Ed Boon alludes to the possibility of the developer’s forthcoming fighting game Injustice 2 including Watchmen characters.

As of late, NetherRealm Studios’ creative director Ed Boon has been openly communicating with Injustice 2‘s fan base in order to get a feel for which characters they would like to see in the forthcoming sequel to 2013’s DC Comics-themed superhero fighting game Injustice: Gods Among Us. Just recently, in fact, Boon teased that Sub-Zero and Spawn might be included after the results for a couple of Twitter polls indicated the Mortal Kombat character and comic book antihero were far and away gamers favorite picks among the selections given.

Now, it seems as if Boon is prepared to further excite Injustice 2 fans by alluding to the possibility of characters from Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ seminal graphic novel Watchmen joining the fighting game’s ever-expanding list of DC Comics figures. Although it hasn’t been officially confirmed as of yet, the creative director at least wants to gauge the response of the title’s audience by asking them via Twitter whether or not having the iconic characters from Moore and Gibbons’ original 12-issue miniseries would be a good fit.

For many Injustice 2 fans, the potential of being able to pit Dr. Manhattan against Superman or Silk Spectre versus Wonder Woman would be fantastic to say the least, but having any of the team members from Watchmen be a part of the game would require for their appearances to make sense within the context of the plot. Of course, that isn’t to say the heroes couldn’t simply be included as guest characters in the way that Mortal Kombat‘s Scorpion was made available via DLC for the initial release in the series.

Should Boon and NetherRealm Studios eventually decide to give Watchmen characters a go in Injustice 2, the next step would be figuring out which character could work the best within the framework of the title’s brutal gameplay. Naturally, when the notion of over-the-top violence comes to mind, the obvious pick would be Eddie Blake (AKA The Comedian) due to his deadly arsenal of weaponry and cynical worldview. However, considering the fact that the game already has a character fulfilling the role of an assassin-like warrior with an armory of lethal wares – that is, Suicide Squad‘s Deadshot – perhaps it would be more interesting to go with a more unconventional choice such as the obscure Watchmen antagonist Twilight Lady.

Taking into account Injustice 2‘s graphic and gritty nature, perhaps the most apt selection for the game would be the noir private detective-themed vigilante known as Rorschach. As a matter of fact, he’s easily one of our top 10 characters we want in the game, so his inclusion would certainly boost our eagerness to play the title should he end up making the cut.

With Injustice 2 still lacking a concrete release date, there’s really no telling if Watchmen characters will go on to be part of the main roster, post-launch DLC packs, or left out altogether. Ed Boon’s asking of the game’s fan base could simply be his way of testing the waters for adding ancillary heroes and villains from other DC Comics properties. At this point in time, all we can do is wait to see what the future holds for Injustice 2.

Injustice 2 is expected to release sometime in 2017 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
