Marvel vs Capcom Infinite Confirmed for 2017

Marvel vs Capcom Infinite Confirmed for 2017

During PlayStation Experience 2016, Sony Interactive Entertainment officially announces the existence of Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite and its release in 2017.

Despite its developers denying rumors of a new installment in the fan-favorite crossover fighting franchise not being in the works, Sony used its PlayStation Experience 2016 event to officially announce the release of Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite. As one might imagine, there was much fanfare and revelry from those in attendance during and after its reveal.

As seen in the official trailer below, Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite‘s first confirmed characters for play are going to be series regulars Iron Man, Ryu, and Mega Man, with the addition of a brand new hero in Carol Danvers (AKA Captain Marvel). Although the teaser is rather limited in that it only offers a brief cinematic of the characters fighting, it’s safe to say that it’s just enough of a taste to get fans of the franchise excited for the forthcoming release.

Directly after Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite‘s official unveiling, the chairman of SIE Worldwide Studios, Shawn Layden confirmed that PlayStation Experience 2016 would host world premiere gameplay during the Capcom Cup 2016. While the Sony executive didn’t reveal any more details as to what kind of content fans should expect, publisher and developer Capcom has provided some supplementary information on what’s to come, confirming different single-player modes and “rich” multiplayer content.

Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite is set to have a single-player Arcade, Training, and Mission mode, as well as a cinematic Story Mode that puts players in between both universes as they fight to the top to take on the game’s new villain. That said, it’s safe to presume this antagonist is the mysterious figure seen at the end of the teaser above, but should that be the case, their identity still remains unknown.

Of course, with Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite being a sequel, creators are going to tweak, change, and refine gameplay aspects that defined the predecessors in the series. As far as these alterations are concerned, Capcom will be introducing free-form 2v2 team battles instead of the prior entry’s 3v3 fights.

Furthermore, the developer will incorporate a feature called “Infinite Power,” which will let Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite players choose one of the Infinity Stones from the Marvel Universe before a match that customizes characters with unique abilities and effects that could change the outcome of a battle to turn the tides of victory. This could work similarly to the third entry’s X-Factor feature that increased speed and damage output for a limited time, but such a comparison is only speculation at this point.

The confirmation of Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite was not the only announcement related to the series, as Layden went on to state that its predecessor in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 is now available on the PlayStation 4. Fans interested in obtaining the title can do so by downloading it on the PlayStation Network. This will be the first instance of UMvC 3 being obtainable in an official capacity online after it was removed from digital storefronts about three years ago.

All in all, now that the multiple sources behind the assertion that Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite would get a release for 2017 have been vindicated, it’s nice to know that the series will indeed be continuing. Hopefully, we will get to see more of the game’s roster unveiled sooner rather than later.

Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite is currently in production and is set to launch sometime in 2017.
