Mighty No. 9

Mighty No. 9

Following the failure of the highly publicized KickStarter campaign for Shadow of the Eternals, the website’s ability to get big games funded may have been called into question by users. If that is the case, then the incredibly recent success of Mighty No. 9 should put proof back into the pudding that KickStarter is still very much a viable option for indie developers hoping to get their respective games off the ground.

Mighty No. 9, for those who haven’t already been made aware of the title, is Keiji Inafune’s spiritual successor to the largely unused Mega Man franchise that Capcom currently owns. Inafune is responsible not only for creating the iconic blue bomber, but having a role in the development of other games such as Dead Rising and Onimusha. While the legendary game designer’s reasons for departing Capcom are still unknown, the cancellation of Mega Man Legends 3 is largely considered to be a catalyst.

That’s why it’s only fitting that Inafune is revisiting the genre that kickstarted his career in the form of Mighty No. 9. The project has already exceeded its $900,000 goal within 48 hours of going live, which is still an amazing feat despite the number of prolific staff that are involved with developing the software — many of which had roles in previous Mega Man titles.

The game stars a new robotic protagonist known as Beck, who’ll have to put an end to the villainous actions of eight other Mighty Numbers (robots) that came before him; hence the name Mighty No. 9. Despite having an incredibly similar aesthetic to its source material, the developers at Comcept are looking to expand upon the genre. A majority of these additions to the side-scroller will be Beck’s ability to transform his limbs and body into a plethora of different things, ranging from magnets to a tank, respectively.

With the KickStarter campaign scheduled to come to a close on October 1st, there’s still plenty of time for stretch goals to be hit. As of this writing, Mighty No. 9 will officially be coming to PC, with Mac/Linux versions becoming a reality at $1.35 Million and Wii U, PS3, and Xbox 360 versions planned if the game manages to hit $2.5 Million.
