Capcom Could Revive 'Dormant' Games After MvC Infinite

Capcom announces tentative plans to possibly revive some of its “dormant” franchises after the release of the upcoming fighting game Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite.

Over the weekend during PlayStation Experience 2016, the video game developer Capcom confirmed the continuation of one of its long inactive franchises with the forthcoming release of Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite in 2017 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. Fans of the series have undoubtedly been excited since the reveal, as it means that they will soon be able to play the first title in the series in nearly five years, which has led Capcom to suggest that other “dormant” franchises in its stable of IPs could be revived after the fighting game’s release next year.

This information comes by way of a press release from Capcom, with the Japanese publisher and developer declaring that in addition to releasing “major” games like Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite each year, it will also bring back franchises that have been inoperative. Although Capcom didn’t mention any specific titles when it comes to achieving this feat, the company did state that the revivals will be for properties that have not had a new release in recent history.

Choosing Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite as the initial game to spearhead this revival campaign certainly seems like a good choice, for not only is it first brand-new entry in the franchise since 2012’s Origins, but also it ought to serve as a solid way to remind fans of the surfeit of characters and series Capcom has to offer. Bearing this in mind, it’s quite possible that some of the fighters in Infinite on Capcom’s side could very well be from one of the “dormant” games that gets resuscitated.

As seen in the first gameplay trailer for Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite, Mega Man X will be joining the roster alongside the likes of Street Fighter‘s Ryu, and there’s a chance that the iconic blue bomber eventually gets another standalone game all his own. After all, the last official release to come out with Mega Man X as the protagonist was 2004’s Mega Man X8 for PlayStation 2. Then again, with the recent addition of Morrigan to MvC Infinite, Capcom could be indicating its intentions to release another Darkstalkers game.

Of course, Capcom has a plethora of properties from which to choose when it comes to resurrecting older franchises beyond Marvel vs. Capcom, so it’s really anyone’s guess as to which properties could receive a resurgence. As a matter of fact, nearly a year ago, the developer was in talks to potentially give Onimusha a revival and have a new entry in the classic action-adventure series for the current generation. While there’s no telling as to whether or not that will eventually occur, one can only hope that Capcom focuses first and foremost on making its titles that are currently slated for release as perfect as possible instead of putting the cart before the horse.

What do you think about Capcom possibly reviving more of its “dormant” franchises after Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite? Which of the company’s properties would you like to see make a comeback?

Capcom is set to release Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite sometime in 2017 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
