'EVE Valkyrie' Screenshots Are Absolutely Gorgeous

With gamers and press alike beginning their preparations for the annual pilgrimage to Los Angeles to see the latest and greatest in the world of video games, speculation has begun as to what will end up stealing the show. For many, that show-stealer won’t be any one game but rather the evolution of virtual reality technology. Despite still being in its infancy, if one game were to represent this grand push forward into the realm of VR, EVE: Valkyrie could very well be it.

Residing within the acclaimed EVE Online universe, dogfighting is the name of the game in EVE: Valkyrie. Following the recent announcement that Battlestar Galactica alum Katee Sackhoff will be joining Valkyrie’s ranks, it’s clear that CCP Games are intent on maintaining a high sci-fi pedigree. Voice talent alone will not get this title out of the atmosphere though, and that’s where a new cache of gorgeous screenshots come in.

With EVE Fanfest well underway in Reykjavik, Iceland it was no surprise that gamers would get a new look at the upcoming Project Morpheus and Oculus Rift-based dogfighter. Looking at the newest batch of screenshots, it’s clear that the game has been benefiting greatly from its shift over to Unreal Engine 4. Gamers are no strangers to the vastness and beauty of space, but this is arguably one of the most impressive-looking renderings yet. There’s just enough flash and awe to pull the player into the universe – especially with VR involved – but not so much that it detracts from the experience as an unneeded distraction.

Arguably the most striking feature of Valkyrie‘s ships is the utter simplicity of their interiors. Gamers are so used to seeing incredibly detailed but equally claustrophobic HUDs which makes the wide-open viewing window a blessing, especially considering the head tracking of VR technology. Being able to looks around and see a panoramic view of the battle ahead of you will not only look stunning, but it will also allow players an increased sense of situational awareness. Just check out the recent trailer below:

With the fears that Facebook’s acquisition of Oculus may affect the game put to rest, the game looks like it only has one way to go: Up. Showing off how impressive its dogfights will be, it’s no surprise that EVE: Valkyrie made our list of most anticipated titles of 2014. EVE Fanfest is just the beginning though, as the coming of E3 2014 will no doubt mean a wealth of new information for sci-fi and shooter fans alike.

Do you think EVE: Valkyrie will be worth a purchase of the Oculus? What do you feel is the best representation of deep space in gaming?
