GTA5 Sold 6 Million Copies In Just The UK

Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto 5 sells over 6 million copies in the United Kingdom, continuing its reign as the best-selling game within the region.

When Rockstar Games first launched Grand Theft Auto 5 in 2013, the high profile title took the world by storm. It’s now been 3 years since gamers returned to the streets of Los Santos, and Rockstar Games has kept the good times rolling with frequent updates to enhance the game’s online experience. That’s why it’s almost unsurprising to hear that Rockstar Games has managed to sell 6 million copies of the game in the United Kingdom alone, and that’s before taking digital sales into consideration.

It’s not like things have been slowing down too much for Grand Theft Auto 5, either. As the holiday season approaches, the title has managed to secure the Number 5 spot for top selling physical games, a feat impressive even before considering how long the title has been out. The game was already declared the best-selling game ever in the UK almost 2 years ago, and it seems like Rockstar Games has done well to keep the game from fading away quietly.

The title’s art director declared that Grand Theft Auto 5 was a massive endeavor even by Rockstar Games’ own high standards, stating that the game cost an estimated $265 million to produce. Selling over 70 million copies of the game quickly helped recoup that investment, and even GTA Online has earned the studio about half a billion dollars through online sales, which more than covers the cost it took to develop and market the game in the first place.

Grand Theft Auto Online makes its money by supplying gamers with a plethora of new content updates and microtransactions. This is why those still taking part in the online carnage will be able to enjoy the snow-filled streets of Los Santos in an upcoming holiday update, which brings in everything from gingerbread masks to some truly unruly Santa cosplays. Cosmetic updates aside, those taking missions online can also ply their trade as Gone in 60 Seconds impersonators stealing exotic cars in bulk, or even mourn the Sons of Anarchy console game that never happened with some of GTA: Online‘s biker-themed content.

Some fans may be upset that the long-awaited single player DLC seems to have been permanently shelved in favor of the cash-grabbing online content. However, it’s clear that many gamers are happy to continue roaming in the online world for the time being.
