Resident Evil 7 Demo Played Through in Third-Person

A video game modder takes it upon themselves to play through the demo for Capcom’s forthcoming survival-horror title Resident Evil 7 from a third-person perspective.

Considering all that Capcom has revealed thus far for Resident Evil 7, it’s safe to say that the survival-horror release is somewhat of a shift in the series’ standard set of offerings insofar that developers are eschewing the use of traditional characters like Leon S. Kennedy, while also making some tweaks to the way in which the franchise’s approach to gameplay is executed. For instance, one of the major alterations to have been made by Capcom came from its decision to give the seventh installment a first-person view – a first for the franchise – instead of a fixed-camera or third-person perspective.

As it happens, Resident Evil 7 fans have already gotten a taste of what it’s going to be like to control the main character Ethan while peering through his eyes, thanks to Capcom’s release of various trial versions of the game last year, starting with the Beginning Hour demo. Of course, with the teaser demo having been available for quite some time now, one should expect fans like the YouTuber Tom Humble to do their best to exploit the source material in any way they can, especially if they’ve already completed what’s being offered in the official product.

As seen in the video below courtesy of Tom Humble, the modder and YouTuber has managed to shift the Resident Evil 7 demo’s perspective from first-person into third-person, which reveals that the protagonist does not actually have a head. Since the camera is supposed to rest upon the main character’s shoulders for the duration of the game, Capcom’s developers didn’t go through the motions of designing him a noggin at all.

For the uninitiated, the discovery of the Resident Evil 7 demo’s main character  being headless isn’t too outlandish of an encounter. Typically, when one alters the view in a game that’s only supposed to be first-person, the character models often end up being shown without heads. For instance, fans have previously come across this situation in Outlast and Firewatch, as both games depict their main characters sans skull when moving out of first-person and into third.

Obviously, the Resident Evil 7 demo’s gameplay from a third-person perspective appears to be significantly clunkier and a little odder when compared to it being in first-person. However, it’s worth mentioning how commendable the third-person animations look from the perspectives in the clip above.

Naturally, with the full version of Resident Evil 7 coming out in less than a couple of weeks from now, fans should expect to see Tom Humble or some other gamer eventually attempt to shift the title into third-person in a bid to see a beheaded protagonist in the final product. Certainly, though, Capcom is more interested in seeing whether or not its prediction for Resident Evil 7 to sell more than 4 million units on day one will pan out. If it doesn’t, there’s a possibility that heads will roll at the developer’s headquarters.

Resident Evil 7 is set to release on January 24, 2017 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
