Upcoming Book Covers Destiny's Troubled Development

By now, the development troubles during the making of Destiny have become the stuff of gaming legend. While Jason Schreier detailed some of those issues during an earlier piece written for Kotaku, however, his latest announcement seems to indicate there is a lot more of that story left to tell. Schreier announced on his Twitter yesterday that he would be releasing a book called Blood, Sweat, and Pixels, and one of the stories it would cover would be more about Destiny‘s difficult development stages.

There has been a lot of speculation over the years about just how much of Destiny‘s development was neutered by deadlines and Bungie adjusting to a new partnership with Activision. Even at release, fans with a keen eye noted that a lot of Destiny content had been cut before launch, while many passionate Guardians will cite Destiny: The Taken King as the first truly “complete” Destiny game despite its status as an expansion.

Given the fact that Destiny 2 should be coming soon, Schreier’s new details regarding the development of the original Destiny will arrive at a very interesting time in the series’ history. The book’s official description states that it will follow “Bungie spinning out from their corporate overlords at Microsoft to create Destiny“, and it’s very likely the story will shed some light on just how chaotic that move was for Destiny‘s developer.

If, as some expect, that turbulence was a major reason behind Destiny‘s lackluster launch and subsequent comeback with The Taken King, then Schreier’s story might also generate higher expectations for Destiny 2. Bungie has had a lot of time to learn from the mistakes the developer made with the original Destiny, and things have settled down considerably for the studio since the initial separation from Microsoft. Blood, Sweat, and Pixels might do double duty in explaining what went wrong (and, to be fair, what went right) during Destiny‘s development while also, very subtly, hinting that Destiny 2 could be the blockbuster its predecessor was supposed to be all along.

Destiny is available now for PS4, Xbox One, PS3, and Xbox 360. Destiny 2 is still expected to release in 2017.
