Five Nights at Freddy's World Release Date

Five Nights at Freddy's World Release Date

Five Nights at Freddy’s World, the fifth Five Nights at Freddy’s title and the first role-playing game in the franchise, is on track for release on February 19.

The Five Nights at Freddy‘s horror franchise took the world by storm, heavily capitalizing on its success as a Let’s Play and livestreaming experience. That all four games in the franchise were created by a single developer, Scott Cawthon, in the span of less than a year only adds to the franchise’s legacy. A change is in store, however, as game five will take a role-playing turn with Five Nights at Freddy’s World. Today came an update from Scott via his Steam community, confirming a February 19 release date for FNaFW.

There are a few surprising things regarding the release date announcement, but only because they’re unique for Scott and the Five Nights at Freddy’s franchise in particular. First, Scott isn’t known for regularly scheduled release dates at all. One afternoon a new game will appear available on Steam and next day a thousand reaction videos will be on YouTube. Then the wait begins again. Second, a Feb. 19 release date will mark a 7-month development cycle for Five Nights at Freddy’s World, by far the longest development time of any Freddy game.

One explanation for the extended development cycle is simply that this game is so starkly different than what’s come before, it’s only reasonable that Scott needs more time to make it. The previous Freddy titles were all remarkably similar, so the short time in between is understandable — if still impressive. Scott also provided a bit more insight into what’s taking up his time in recent months. Today, Scott announced the birth of his son. The release date announcement was apparently even posted from the hospital!

With over a month left between now and the launch of Five Nights at Freddy’s World, the question as to just what this game is looms larger than ever. Scott Cawthon maintains that the story of the franchise so far concluded with Five Nights at Freddy’s 4 and that this RPG follow-up is something else entirely. I doubt that any of Scott’s fans trust him in this regard, however. Will Five Nights at Freddy’s World end up being a sequel? Perhaps not, but there’s certainly more to this “cute” and “fun” RPG than meets the eye.

Yet maybe that’s exactly what the franchise needs at this point. Four horror games released in a year, each with very similar and simple mechanics and each highly dependent on tense atmosphere and jump scares, can wear a fanbase out. If by chance Five Nights at Freddy’s World is exactly what it appears to be, a love letter RPG making fun of the franchise’s silliness, then maybe that wouldn’t be so bad. Or maybe Scott has just found enough success and wants to do something completely different for a while.

Whatever it turns out to be, Five Nights at Freddy’s World is now planned for release on PC starting February 19. An Android and iOS version of the game will then be made available in the weeks following. Or knowing Scott Cawthon, maybe it’ll be out next week. Be prepared.
