It may not be as prevalent in this current generation of consoles, but exclusives are still very much a part of this industry. And with virtual reality continuing to gain attention, gamers are now seeing a further split, where games are unique to only one VR platform. One such game that will have its own VR exclusivity is Resident Evil 7.
As announced on the official Resident Evil 7 site, the VR experience packed in with the game will be exclusive to the PlayStation VR headset. That makes sense given that Resident Evil 7 was announced and has been exclusively demoed with the Sony VR product, but it is no less disappointing to Vive and Oculus Rift owners.
The good news, though, is that the exclusivity window for Resident Evil 7 on PlayStation VR is only 12 months. Presumably after that window passes both Oculus Rift and Vive owners will be able to experience the VR version of the game.
What’s curious about this is we don’t yet know how the Resident Evil 7 VR package will work. If the VR experience is packed in with the game – in this case the PS4 version – then presumably that means the PC version would just need an update to gain access to VR content. As of right now, that’s just speculation, though.
We do know that there will be a deluxe version of Resident Evil 7 that will include the base game and a Season Pass. That Season Pass is said to include three additional story chapters, but that’s all Capcom is saying at this point. Obviously, the studio wants to keep players focused on Resident Evil 7’s main content offering, which they have done through the release of special prequel “demos” since the game’s announcement.
First was the release of Beginning Hour, a short gameplay experience that had its fair share of mysteries to solve. Then, last month, Capcom updated the Beginning Hour Resident Evil 7 demo with a Twilight expansion. This new piece of content expanded on the prior demo while also giving players a closer look at RE 7’s new mansion.
For now it’s a waiting game, but we wouldn’t be surprised to see more Resident Evil 7 content surface in the mean time. A new demo, perhaps even one for the PlayStation VR, which releases later this month, could be in the pipeline. And, as always, Game Rant will keep you posted.
Resident Evil 7 releases January 24, 2017 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
