Yesterday, Rockstar Games sent the Internet into a frenzy as it released what many believed to be a Red Dead Redemption 2 teaser. Although the teaser was posted to social media and the developer’s website without comment, that didn’t stop many from speculating that a big Red Dead related announcement is in the pipeline.
Today, these eager fans have been rewarded, as Rockstar has posted yet another image that could be Red Dead Redemption 2 concept art. Posted with no comment the image depicts seven people walking as the sun sets (or rises) and a mountain range can be seen in the background. The big clue that this is something to do with Red Dead (other than the obvious, color scheme similarities) is that each of the seven characters is wearing a cowboy hat and the all appear to be wielding weapons too.

Based on this, many have already begun to speculate on what the next Red Dead game – which will likely not be called Red Dead Retribution – will be about. One popular fan theory is that the game will be a prequel that focuses on Dutch’s Gang, the infamous gang that counted (Red Dead Redemption protagonist) John Marston, (John’s wife) Abigail Marston, Bill Williamson, Javier Escuella, and Dutch van der Linde as its members.
While that’s a few members short of seven, it’s plausible that Rockstar will introduce a few new faces to make up the full roster. Assuming that Rockstar doesn’t make the full gang playable, it would mean that the rumors of Red Dead Redemption 2 having two playable characters could still be proven correct.
Moreover, although Rockstar Games clearly plans to officially announce Red Dead Redemption 2 sooner rather than later, it seems unlikely that the developer will pull a Bethesda/Fallout 4 and release the new game before Christmas. Although fans would be delighted to get to play the game so soon, Take-Two previously confirmed that the next Rockstar project won’t release until April 2017, meaning that there will be a six month wait, minimum, before players can get their hands on it.
That said, if the recent sales of the original Red Dead Redemption are to be believed, there are plenty who don’t mind having to wait a little extra. Red Dead Redemption 2 is the game that people have been waiting years to play so having to wait a handful of extra months might not seem like such a big deal.
