It’s rare to see a mid-generation console update become such an interesting battleground, but that’s exactly what has happened between Sony and Microsoft. Although Sony’s PS4 Pro has made it to store shelves before Microsoft’s Project Scorpio, there is certainly a huge amount of excitement around the powerful Xbox console. However, even though 2017 is going to be the year of Project Scorpio, Xbox fans may be waiting a while for a full reveal of the device.
According to Head of Xbox Phil Spencer, it’s actually still not certain that the console will be able to make an appearance before E3 2017. The Xbox chief took to Twitter to answer some fan questions, and answered a query as to whether Project Scorpio would make an appearance before the expo. Spencer replied “honestly not sure yet but I know people want this.”
Spencer was then able to reiterate that development on the console is still going incredibly well. Asked about whether he was happy with how Scorpio was proceeding, he replied “absolutely, great that our 1st party teams are getting engines up and tuned, great progress across studios.” This corroborates with comments made by Halo director Frank O’Connor, who revealed that Project Scorpio was “beefier” than he had expected.
Although some fans may be disappointed that an in-the-flesh view of the Scorpio may not be available until E3 2017, it certainly isn’t off the cards just yet. After all, it wouldn’t be the first time that Spencer’s flair of a surprise reveal has come to the fore, so the console may well be ready to go prior to E3 2017. Of course, a potentially larger chunk of time could be focused on the souped-up console at the expo, but whether that’s the first time that gamers are able to truly understand what it offers is not certain just yet.
This is not the only time that Phil Spencer has spoken up over recent days, either. The Xbox head opened up regarding the surprise cancellation of Scalebound, explaining that although it was a difficult decision to make, it was still the decision that was “better for Xbox gamers.” Meanwhile, Spencer also reiterated that Scalebound‘s cancellation will not impact on the company’s chances of taking risks in future.
Regarding Project Scorpio, so far the signs are good that the console will be a big leap in power over the current Xbox One and the Xbox One S, with the Scorpio capable of running Microsoft games at native 4K resolution. However, the console’s flexibility also looks to be a selling point, with Project Scorpio also compatible with the Xbox 360 backward compatibility program. Hopefully, the final product will live up to the expectations of Xbox users.
