Greatness Redefined: The Power of the Towel

lead by example by christ
In our world, “greatness” is usually measured by how many people serve *you*. It’s about the title on your business card, the number of followers on your profile, and the level of authority you wield. We climb ladders, we build platforms, and we protect our status at all costs.

But two thousand years ago, the most powerful person who ever lived redefined greatness forever. He didn’t do it with a sword or a scepter; He did it with a towel and a basin of water.

The Shocking Act of a King

The scene in John 13:1–17 is one of the most counter-cultural moments in history. It was the night before Jesus’ crucifixion. He knew His time was short. He knew He was the Son of God. And yet, He got up from the table, wrapped a towel around His waist, and began to wash His disciples’ feet.
To understand how shocking this was, you have to realize that foot-washing was the job of the lowest servant in the house. It was dirty, smelly, and degrading. The disciples were stunned. Peter even tried to stop Him. But Jesus was making a point that would echo through the centuries: **If the King of Kings is willing to serve, no task is beneath His followers.

Leading from the Bottom Up

Jesus Christ wasn’t just doing a nice favor but he was establishing a new model of leadership.

In Mark 10:42–45, He told His disciples: *”You know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them… Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant.”

This is called Servant Leadership. It’s the idea that authority isn’t for self-advancement but for the empowerment of others.

Psychologically, this approach to leadership is incredibly effective. People are far more likely to follow someone they trust, and trust is built through service and humility.

When a leader is willing to get their hands dirty and put the needs of the team first, it creates a culture of loyalty and collaboration that status-based leadership can never achieve.

The Psychology of Service

There’s a beautiful irony in the way Jesus Christ calls us to live. While the world tells us that self-promotion is the key to happiness, the bible tells us that serving others is one of the most reliable ways to increase our own well-being.

When we focus on the needs of others, we get a break from the “me-centered” anxiety that often plagues our lives. We find a sense of purpose that goes beyond our own achievements.

Jesus Christ knew that we were designed for connection and contribution. By calling us to be servants, He was actually calling us into the most fulfilling version of ourselves.

Sacrificial Love as the Ultimate Influence

The ultimate expression of Jesus Christ’s servant leadership was, of course, the cross. As Philippians 2:5–11 beautifully describes, Jesus emptied himself and became obedient to death.

This is the ultimate paradox: The way up is down.

Jesus Christ’s influence didn’t come from forcing people to obey but from His willingness to die for them. This kind of sacrificial love is the most powerful force in the universe. It changes hearts in a way that power never can.

When you love someone deeply, like your husband or wife, your children, your parents, most people would die to protect them. This is the ultimate act of love. Jesus Christ loves us so much that he was willing to die for us all.

How to Lead Like Jesus Today

You don’t need a title to be a leader. You just need a towel.

Leading like Jesus means looking for the unseen tasks. It means listening more than you talk. It means asking, “How can I help you succeed?” rather than “How can you help me?”

Whether you’re a CEO, a parent, a student, or a friend, you have an opportunity today to redefine greatness. You can choose to climb the ladder, or you can choose to hold it for someone else..

Where can you pick up the towel today?

Identify one situation where you can serve someone without expecting anything in return.

Watch how it changes the atmosphere and see how it changes you.
