What Are the Signs of the End Times Jesus Described?

end times

End times conversations can get intense fast. I have heard people connect every headline to prophecy, and I have also met people who avoid the topic entirely because it feels confusing or scary. But Jesus Christ did talk about the end, and when He did, His goal was not to create panic. His goal was to form steady, faithful disciples who live ready, loving, and anchored in God.

The most well-known place where Jesus describes signs of the end is the Olivet Discourse, found in Matthew 24 to 25, Mark 13, and Luke 21. Let’s focus mainly on Matthew 24, and I will bring in the others where helpful.

The Context: A Question About the Temple and the End

In Matthew 24:1-3, Jesus Christ predicts the destruction of the temple, and the disciples ask two connected questions: when will this happen, and what will be the sign of His coming and the end of the age?

This matters because some of what Jesus Christ says relates to the destruction of Jerusalem and the temple, which historically happened in AD 70, and some of what He says points beyond that to His final return. Many Christians debate how to map every detail, but the core guidance Jesus Christ gives is clear.

1) Anti-Christs and False Prophets

Jesus Christ starts with a warning: Watch out that no one deceives you (Matthew 24:4). Then He says many will come claiming to represent Him, and they will mislead many (Matthew 24:5, 24:11).

This is one of the most consistent end times signs in Jesus’ teaching: deception increases. That means one of the most spiritual things you can do is stay rooted in Scripture and stay connected to faithful community. Discernment is not optional.

2) Wars, Rumors of Wars, and Global Upheaval

Jesus Christ says there will be wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed (Matthew 24:6). That sentence is important. Jesus acknowledges turmoil and tells His disciples not to live in fear.

He adds that nation will rise against nation, and there will be famines and earthquakes in various places (Matthew 24:7). Then He calls these the beginning of birth pains (Matthew 24:8).

Birth pains mean something is coming. They also mean there is a process. Jesus Christ is framing suffering as part of a larger story, not proof that God has abandoned the world.

3) Persecution and Pressure on Believers

Jesus Christ says His followers will face persecution, hatred, and betrayal (Matthew 24:9-10). He also warns that love can grow cold because of increased wickedness (Matthew 24:12).

That line about love growing cold is a warning for the heart. It is possible to live through chaos and become numb, cynical, and harsh. Jesus is calling you to stay warm in love, even when the world gets cold.

He promises endurance: The one who stands firm to the end will be saved (Matthew 24:13). That is not salvation by personal toughness. It is perseverance by staying connected to Christ. Jude 1:20-21 speaks similarly about building yourself up in faith and keeping yourself in God’s love.

4) The Gospel Preached to All Nations

Matthew 24:14 says, This gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.

So one major end-times sign is not only catastrophe. It is mission. The spread of the Gospel is part of the timeline. God is patient, giving space for repentance (2 Peter 3:9).

This keeps the church focused. We are not meant to be prophecy hobbyists. We are meant to be witnesses.

 5) The Abomination That Causes Desolation

Jesus references the abomination that causes desolation (Matthew 24:15), a phrase from Daniel (Daniel 9:27; Daniel 11:31; Daniel 12:11). Interpretations vary. Some see it fulfilled in the events surrounding the temple’s destruction. Others see it as pointing to a future climax of rebellion and desecration.

Whatever the exact timing, the point is that Jesus expects a season of intense tribulation. He urges urgency and wisdom in response (Matthew 24:16-22).

6) Cosmic Signs and the Visible Return of Jesus Christ

Jesus speaks of cosmic disturbances and then says the sign of the Son of Man will appear, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven, with power and great glory (Matthew 24:30).

This is not a hidden event. Jesus Christ presents His return as visible and decisive. Revelation 1:7 echoes this: Look, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him.

The Big Takeaway: Readiness, Not Obsession

Jesus Christ says no one knows the day or the hour (Matthew 24:36). That means date-setting is disobedience dressed up as confidence. Jesus repeatedly calls for readiness instead:

– Stay awake (Matthew 24:42).
– Be faithful with what you have been given (Matthew 24:45-51).
– Live prepared with real oil in your lamp, meaning real faith, not appearances (Matthew 25:1-13).

How to Live Well in Light of the End

If you want to live in an end-times-aware way without living anxious, here is a healthy direction:

– Keep Jesus Christ central. Prophecy is meant to deepen worship, not replace it.
– Stay rooted in Scripture so deception does not shape you (Matthew 24:4).
– Commit to love. Do not let love grow cold (Matthew 24:12).
– Stay on mission. The Gospel still needs to be shared (Matthew 24:14).
– Pray for strength and wisdom (Luke 21:36).

Jesus Christ’s end times teaching is not meant to make you afraid of tomorrow. It is meant to make you faithful today. The King is coming. That is not a horror story for believers. It is hope. And until He comes, we live steady, prayerful, and loving, trusting that God holds history in His hands.
