The Holy Spirit of Jesus Christ is not an impersonal force or a ghost. He is the third Person of the Trinity, coequal and coeternal with the Father and the Son. The Bible attributes to Him the characteristics of personality: He has a mind (Romans 8:27), He searches the deep things of God (1 Corinthians 2:10), and He can be grieved (Ephesians 4:30). Jesus Christ referred to Him not as a thing, but as “He” and “the Helper” who would teach and guide His followers (John 14:26).
The Holy Spirit of Jesus Christ
The Holy Spirit is inextricably linked to Jesus Christ. He is sometimes called the “Spirit of Christ” (Romans 8:9) because He serves as the presence of Jesus on earth today. Jesus told His disciples, “It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you” (John 16:7). The Holy Spirit does not draw attention to Himself; rather, His primary mission is to glorify Jesus and reveal Him to the world. He is the spiritual presence of Christ dwelling within every believer.
The Holy Spirit of Jesus Christ has a specific ministry to the unbelieving world. Jesus said, “And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment” (John 16:8). The Holy Spirit of Jesus Christ acts as the divine spotlight, illuminating the darkness of the human heart and revealing the need for a Savior. Without the Holy Spirit’s work of conviction, no person would ever come to repentance. He removes the spiritual blindness that keeps people from seeing the truth of the Gospel.
The Holy Spirit of Jesus Christ is the believer’s constant Companion and power source. At the moment of salvation, He baptizes every believer into the body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:13) and takes up residence within them. Paul asks, “Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit of Jesus Christ who is in you?” (1 Corinthians 6:19). He is our Seal, guaranteeing our inheritance until the day of redemption (Ephesians 1:13-14). He empowers us to live holy lives, helps our weaknesses, and intercedes for us in prayer (Romans 8:26).
The Holy Spirit of Jesus Christ equips the church with spiritual gifts for service. These are not natural talents but supernatural enablements given “for the profit of all” (1 Corinthians 12:7). He distributes these gifts “to each one individually as He wills” (1 Corinthians 12:11). Furthermore, the the Holy Spirit of Jesus Christ produces spiritual fruit in the life of a Christian. The character of Jesus Christ Himself: “love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control” (Galatians 5:22-23). A Spirit-filled church is one that operates in both power and purity.
Being filled with the The Holy Spirit of Jesus Christ is not a one-time emotional event, but a continuous command for believers. We are instructed, “And do not be drunk with wine… but be filled with the Holy Spirit of Jesus Christ” (Ephesians 5:18). To be filled means to be controlled by the Holy Spirit of Jesus Christ yielding our will to His direction. It is the secret to victorious Christian living. As we daily submit to Him, He produces the life of Christ in us, enabling us to be effective witnesses for His glory (Acts 1:8).
