The Second Coming is the literal, personal, and visible return of Jesus Christ to earth. It is not a spiritual metaphor or a hidden event, but a future reality prophesied throughout Scripture. Just as He ascended into heaven bodily, so He will return (Acts 1:9-11). The Bible promises that “the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God” (1 Thessalonians 4:16). He is coming again to establish His kingdom and fulfill all prophecy.
The Second Coming of Jesus Christ

The Second Coming is necessary to consummate God’s redemptive plan. The first time Jesus came, He came as the Suffering Servant to provide salvation (Hebrews 9:28). When He returns, He will come as the conquering King to execute judgment and restore righteousness. The world is currently in rebellion against God, and only His personal return can bring true justice, bind evil, and establish peace on earth (Revelation 20:1-3).
When Christ returns, He will reward the faithful and judge the wicked. He said, “For the Son of Man will come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and then He will reward each according to his works” (Matthew 16:27). For the believer, it is a moment of glorious reunion and vindication. For the unbeliever, it is a time of reckoning. Every knee will bow, and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord (Philippians 2:10-11).
Jesus Christ explicitly stated that no one knows the day or hour of His return, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father (Matthew 24:36). Throughout history, many have tried to predict the date, but all have failed. We are warned against date-setting and are instead told to “watch therefore, for you do not know what hour your Lord is coming” (Matthew 24:42). The timing is God’s secret; the readiness is our responsibility.
The purpose of the Second Coming is threefold. First, it is to complete the salvation of the saints. We are “eagerly waiting for the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Corinthians 1:7).
Second, it is to judge the nations. Christ will sit on His throne and separate the sheep from the goats (Matthew 25:31-46).
Third, it is to establish His millennial kingdom. He will reign for a thousand years, fulfilling the covenant promises made to David and bringing peace to a groaning creation (Revelation 20:4-6).
The promise of the Second Coming is a powerful motivation for holy living. John writes, “And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as He is pure” (1 John 3:3). We are not to sit idly by, but to be active in serving God, sharing the Gospel, and loving others. Jesus instructed His disciples to “occupy till I come” (Luke 19:13), meaning we are to be faithful stewards of the time and resources He has given us.
When Jesus Christ returns, He will not be alone. The Bible teaches that the armies of heaven will follow Him (Revelation 19:14). This includes the holy angels and the “church of the firstborn”—believers who have died or been raptured prior to His glorious appearing. We will return with Him to share in His triumph. As Paul comforted the Thessalonians, “Thus we shall always be with the Lord” (1 Thessalonians 4:17).
