What Does the Second Coming of Christ Look Like?

second coming of christ

If you have spent any time in a church or even just watched a few disaster movies, you have probably heard about the end of the world and the return of Jesus Christ. It is a topic that can spark a lot of curiosity and, unfortunately, a lot of fear.

People often get bogged down in charts, timelines, and trying to decode every news headline as a sign of the end.

But when we look at what the Bible actually says about the second coming of Christ, the focus is not on fear or speculation. It is on hope, justice, and the completion of God’s plan for the world.

The promise that Jesus Christ will return is one of the most frequently mentioned themes in the New Testament.

In Acts 1:11, as the disciples were watching Jesus Christ ascend into heaven, two angels appeared and told them that this same Jesus Christ will come back in the same way you have seen Him go into heaven.

Jesus Christ Himself spoke about His return many times, telling His followers to be ready and to stay alert.

In John 14:3, He gives a comforting promise: And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me.

There are three main ways that Christians have historically thought about the timing and nature of Jesus’ return. These are often called eschatological views.

Premillennialism suggests that Jesus Christ will return before a thousand-year period of peace and rule on earth. Amillennialism sees the thousand years as a symbolic period representing the current age where Christ rules through His church.

Postmillennialism believes that the world will gradually become more Christianized through the preaching of the Gospel, and then Jesus Christ will return to a world that is already prepared for Him.

While these views differ on the details, they all agree on the most important fact: Jesus Christ is coming back.

So, what will it actually be like? The Bible describes it as a visible, global event. In Revelation 1:7, it says that every eye will see Him.

It will be a time of ultimate justice, where God will set everything right. For those who have suffered and faced injustice, it is a day of rescue.

For the world as a whole, it is the moment when the Creator returns to reclaim His creation. It is not about the destruction of the world as much as it is about its renewal.

As it says in Revelation 21:5, He who was seated on the throne said, I am making everything new!

Living in light of this hope should change how we live today. It is not an excuse to check out of society or stop caring about the world.

In fact, it is the opposite. Because we know that Jesus Christ is coming back to establish a kingdom of peace and justice, we are called to live out the values of that kingdom right now.

We are called to be people of integrity, mercy, and love. In Matthew 24:45-47, Jesus Christ talks about the faithful servant who is busy doing his work when the master returns.

Our job is to be found doing the work of the kingdom—feeding the hungry, caring for the lonely, and sharing the good news.

The second coming also gives us a unique kind of resilience. When we see the news and it feels like the world is spinning out of control, we can remember that the story doesn’t end in chaos.

It ends in a wedding feast. It ends with the king on the throne and every tear being wiped away. This hope is what the apostle Paul calls an anchor for the soul in Hebrews 6:19. It keeps us steady when the storms of life hit.

Ultimately, the second coming of Christ is about a relationship being fully realized. It is the moment when we will see Him face to face.

1 John 3:2 says that when Christ appears, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is. It is the great homecoming that every human heart is longing for.

Instead of being afraid of the end, we can look forward to the beginning. The beginning of a new world where God’s love is the only law and where we will live in His presence forever.
